Project Notes

Originally designed by William Langford, the Riverside Course at this 36-hole property opened in 1923, but it suffered through years of uninspired design changes. Brian Silva’s much-feted transformation, completed in 2007, took inspiration from and better advantage of its tumbling setting. Nowhere is this more evident than on two entirely new holes, at 15 and 16, the settings for which were suggested by longtime club member Heyward Sullivan.

“He took me for a walk through these woods because he felt they had the potential for golf holes,” Silva says. “He was right. Both holes feature ‘kick’ greens that accept shots using existing landforms — a fade approach on 15 and a draw ‘kick’ on 16. We rerouted to accommodate them, naturally. I can’t say that we followed any original plans, which don’t exist so far as I knew. In fact, the club wanted a Seth Raynor-style course. We agreed that it’s not taking liberties to instill such a property with the old fashioned characteristics of play, ball bounce and shape.”
