CANTON, OH

Brookside

Project Notes

Beginning with a Robert Trent Jones Sr. upgrade in 1962, this course sadly began to lose its Donald Ross style, shape and character. Brian Silva was hired in 2003 to restore the layout and recapture the essence of its original architecture. He removed 800 trees, restored what could be restored and channeled the grand master in creating new features in the Golden Age style. Gold Digest recognized Brookside with its Best New Remodel award for 2005. In 2017, GOLF Magazine added it to the U.S. top 100, effectively snuffing out this Canton, Ohio layout’s reputation as a hidden gem.

What They’re Saying

“What Silva did to reclaim the Ross design was not unroll the original blueprints and slavishly reproduce every feature in accordance with its 1922 dictates. Instead, he updated Brookside while fashioning nearly everything in the style of the original architect… Silva’s work has re-established the nuances of the original Ross design. The bend of a creek, the plunge of a fairway, the dip of a green are all back in play now. Brookside looks and feels like a state-of-the-art classic.”
— Ron Whitten, Golf Digest, 2005

“This Donald Ross design, which is making its Top 100 debut, epitomizes the virtues of parkland golf with rolling topography, sweeping views and a stream that bisects the property. The design lacks for nothing and has reached peak form after years of consulting with Brian Silva. Ross’s use of the stream at holes 4, 5 and 11 is especially noteworthy but the real attention-grabber is Brookside’s set of greens, led by those at the 8th and 12th.”
