Metairie

Project Notes

Seth Raynor-designed Metairie (La.) Country Club celebrated its centenary in 2022 by hiring Brian Silva the year before. His charge was not to “renovate” but rather to undertake a “transformative restoration” of the course by reintroducing its Raynor roots — essentially from scratch.

The intervening century had indeed been tough on the old girl. In 1938, Jack Daray “modernized” the layout. Mid-century, portions of the property were sold off. An early 2000s renovation raised many holes to address flooding issues. As a result, evidence of Raynor’s hand has steadily diminished to the point of non-existence.

“There was literally no Raynor left when I walked on site,” Silva recalls. “On this project, I prefer phrase ‘transformative restoration’ because it rightly suggests that, today, there are far more qualities reminiscent of Raynor than there has ever has been at Metairie… Template holes, greater widths and more choices — allowed by one, short-cut turf — seems to have captured the golfers’ fancy. Rounds of play and new memberships are at an all-time high.”

In 2023, Golf Inc. magazine named Metairie CC its Renovation of the Year.

What They’re Saying

“We have refashioned holes into more recognizable and strategic examples of Raynor’s time-tested templates. Inspired by the opening double green at Yale, the first at Metairie is a Punchbowl and Redan combination. And before the turn, players will have experienced Louisiana versions of Biarritz, Leven, Bottle, Redan, Double Plateau and Road holes, among others. The back nine continues the ode to vintage design with versions of the Lion’s Mouth, Eden, Knoll, Cape, Maiden and Short holes.”
— Darryl Bartlett, senior project manager, NMP Golf Construction

“The club never retained Raynor’s blueprints for the course and wasn’t sure precisely what the architect had left behind. So, in 2021, they hired Brian Silva to reimagine a pure Raynor course on the property. Drawing on as much experience studying and reviving Raynor’s designs throughout the country as anyone over the last 30 years, Silva reproduced vivid versions of the Bottle, Biarritz, Redan, Leven, Road, Eden and others. Though not a historical restoration, Metairie has been completely and imaginatively transformed.”
