Project Notes
The original Polo Grounds and Golf Course at Meadow Brook Club were lost to highway construction and Dick Wilson designed 18 holes that opened in June of 1955 on a new site in Jericho.
In a Sports Illustrated article published in October of 1955, Herbert Warren Wind described his impression of Meadow Brook:
“To my tastes, it is the finest golf course that has been built in this country since Bob Jones and Dr. Alister Mackenzie produced Augusta National back in 1931”.
Land sales in the 1970’s required changes to a number of holes, creating 2 right angle doglegs, greens “re-used” for approach shots coming in directions 180 degrees different from the original design and other changes that plagued the course for decades.
In the fall of 2016, Brian Silva carried out a course wide renovation that included redesign of four greens, restoration of key pin positions on many other greens, adjusting holes to soften doglegs for more strategic play and re working bunkers to highlight strategy and shot shaping originally intended by Wilson’s design.
