Dedham, MASSACHUSETTS

Dedham

Project Notes

Starting as a Polo Club in 1887, golf came on the scene soon after 1893 with Alex Findlay designing a nine at Dedham Golf Club.
Dedham Golf & Polo was formed in 1910 with the Board hiring Donald Ross to fashion a nine hole layout on an entirely different – and largely current – site. Seth Raynor was later retained to design golf holes that brought the course to a full 18 holes.
Brian Silva shepherded a shut down renovation that rebuilt all 18 greens to contemporary specifications and injected Raynor character to those needing a facelift. Bunkering was similarly re fashioned as were fairway mowing patterns with golf holes appropriately wrapped in fescue surrounds. There were no plans to expand the existing Biarritz when construction started but the Club could not resist mid way thru the project and a three level “full” Biarritz took shape, retaining the unique “hold up” features along the sides and rear of the existing green.

What They’re Saying

In the Golf Digest Course Rating issue published after the course re opened, Dedham was elevated for the first time to the Top Courses in Massachusetts list, appropriately illustrating that quality might  still be just as important as quantity (yardage) in the minds of an astute reviewer/player.
